    Workshop Descriptions

    SoulWork: Devising Activism (Introduction to SoulWork Method)
    Monday-Friday, 10am-1pm
    South Dallas Cultural Center, 3400 South Fitzhugh
    For Youth Artists Ages 15-18.
    (Under 15? See our FAQs for Age Considerations.)

    This introductory workshop is designed to engage, support and inspire young people to contribute to the progress of their communities. We will explore the cultural and social justice roots of SoulWork through examples from historic African American legacies of art and activism. Through an interdisciplinary blend of writing, singing, acting/performance and community-building techniques, participants will receive an overview of SoulWork’s principles and practices. By the end of this workshop, participants will have been introduced to key SoulWork techniques to:

    • Explore, discover and create the Soul of a place, performance, or experience;
    • Lead & engage in story circles as a tool to rehearse empathy, diversity and anti-racism engagement;
    • Perform as an ensemble using Call-and-Response to build emotionally-grounded performances and community-engaged events.

      Acting With Soul: Intro to SoulWork Method for Actors/Performers
      Monday-Friday, 1:30pm-4:30pm
      South Dallas Cultural Center, 3400 South Fitzhugh
      For Adult Artists.
      (See our FAQs for Age Requirements.)

      Get out of your head and into your Soul! Through song, movement and performing text (monologues), this beginner’s workshop will focus on an introduction to SoulWork’s key principles of Emotional Availability, Unending Climax and Soul for actors/performers. By the end of this workshop, participants will have been introduced to key SoulWork techniques to:

      • Energize intention and increase urgency in performance through the Unending Climax;
      • Access Emotional Availability to expand vulnerability, dynamics and spontaneity in performance;
      • Explore Soul Words and Journey in performance by building visceral (vs. analytical) connection to language and text.

      While ultimately an acting workshop, singers, dancers and spoken word artists seeking to enhance the emotional reach of their performances are encouraged to apply.

      There will be an invited “Share Day” on Saturday, July 22 for participants from both workshops to come together and share work from their various sessions.
