Step 1: Read the workshop descriptions below to choose which sessions to take. Workshops can stand alone or be taken together to compliment each other. Times for the workshops do not overlap. Interested artists may take as many workshops as fit your schedule.

Workshop Descriptions – Week #1 (July 31-August 4) – For Youth Artists
SoulWork: Devising Activism (Introduction to SoulWork Method)
Monday-Friday, 10am-1pm

For Youth Artists Ages 15-18. (Under 15? See our FAQs for Age Considerations.)
The city is our muse! This introductory workshop is designed to engage, support and inspire young people to contribute to the progress of their communities. We will explore the cultural and social justice roots of SoulWork through examples from historic African American legacies of art and activism. Through site visits to some of Houston’s pioneering arts-activists locations and an interdisciplinary blend of writing, singing, acting/performance and community-building techniques, participants will receive a comprehensive overview of SoulWork’s principles and practices. By the end of this workshop, participants will have been introduced to key SoulWork techniques to:
- Explore, discover and create the Soul of a place, performance, or experience;
- Lead & engage in story circles as a tool to rehearse empathy, diversity and anti-racism engagement;
- Perform as an ensemble using Call-and-Response to build emotionally-grounded performances and community-engaged events.
Acting With Soul: Intro to SoulWork Method for Actors/Performers
Monday-Friday, 1:30pm-4:30pm

Act with Soul! Through song, movement and performing text (monologues), this beginner’s workshop will focus on an introduction to SoulWork’s key principles of Emotional Availability, Unending Climax and Soul for actors/performers.
By the end of this workshop, participants will have been introduced to key SoulWork techniques to:- Perform with focused energy and urgency using the Unending Climax;
- Practice Emotional Availability to make surprising and bold performance choices;
- Use Soul Words to discover the emotional meaning of a text/monologue.
While ultimately an acting workshop, singers, dancers and spoken word artists seeking to enhance the emotional reach of their performances are encouraged to apply.
Workshop Descriptions – Week #2 (August 7-11) – For Adult Artists
SoulWork: Devising Activism (Introduction to SoulWork Method)

This introductory workshop is useful for performing artists (actors, dancers, spoken word poets) AND generative artists (ensembles, writers, directors, teachers/facilitators) interested in tools to create their own work or dynamically engage and mount the work of fellow artists as a means of community-engaged activism. We will explore the cultural and social justice roots of SoulWork through examples from historic African American legacies of art and activism. Through site visits to some of Houston’s pioneering arts-activists locations and an interdisciplinary blend of writing, singing, acting/performance and discussion/community-building techniques, participants will receive a comprehensive overview of SoulWork’s principles and practices. By the end of this workshop, participants will have been introduced to key SoulWork techniques to:
- Engage an ensemble/cast, audience and/or community in discovering/crafting the “soul” of a place, piece of art or experience;
- Encourage and support emotionally-invested participation for artists in rehearsal or performance and for audiences attending/participating in a performance or community-engaged activism;
- Create safer, more inclusive spaces and for emotionally-charged conversations, rehearsals and performances with intense subject matter;
- Design and lead story circles as a tool to rehearse empathy, diversity and anti-racism engagement.
Acting With Soul: Intro to SoulWork Method for Actors/Performers

Through song, movement and performing text (monologues), this beginner’s workshop will focus on an introduction to SoulWork’s key principles of Emotional Availability, Unending Climax and Soul for actors/performers. By the end of this workshop, participants will have been introduced to key SoulWork techniques to:
- Energize intention and increase urgency in performance through the Unending Climax;
- Access Emotional Availability to expand vulnerability, dynamics and spontaneity in performance;
- Explore Soul Words and Journey in performance by building visceral (vs. analytical) connection to language and text.
While ultimately an acting workshop, singers, dancers and spoken word artists seeking to enhance the emotional reach of their performances are encouraged to apply.
There will be an invited “Share Day” on Saturday, August 5 (Week #1) and August 12 (Week #2) for participants from both workshops to come together and share work from their various sessions.
